Red Auerbach was an American basketball coach and executive who is best known for his nine-decade association with the National Basketball Association's Boston Celtics. He was born on September 20, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish immigrants from Russia. Auerbach was a basketball player at George Washington University, where he graduated in 1940. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he began his coaching career at the University of Rhode Island, where he coached for two seasons. In 1950, Auerbach was hired as the head coach of the Boston Celtics, a team that had not won a championship in its first 12 years of existence. He quickly turned the team around, leading them to eight consecutive NBA championships from 1959 to 1966. He was also the first coach to draft an African-American player, Chuck Cooper, in 1950. Auerbach was also the first coach to use the fast break offense, which he developed with Bob Cousy. He was also the first coach to use the sixth man, a player who comes off the bench to provide a spark to the team. Auerbach was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1969.
