Barbara Charline Jordan is an American lawyer, educator and politician who leads the civil rights movement. A Democrat, she was the first African American elected to the Texas Senate after Reconstruction and the first South African American woman to be elected to the US House of Representatives. She is known for her eloquent opening statement during House Judiciary Committee hearings during the Richard Nixon impeachment process, and was the first African American and the first woman to speak important at the 1976 Democratic National Congress. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among many other noble honors. She was a member of the Peabody Awards jury from 1978 to 1980. She was the first African American woman to be buried at the Texas State Cemetery.
